Teach elementary school for 7,000 years, or fail as a CEO? The pay is the same.
Teachers that, at least in Missouri, make on average a little less than $50,000USD per year, whic is about $70,000AUD.
Quick question: How many years does it take to earn $55,000,000 at $50,000 per year?
It would take 1,100 years.
That’s how many years a teacher would have to work to earn the same amount Marissa Mayer may receive in a severance package if Yahoo is bought out. In the event that she manages to stay at Yahoo for another year and a half she may earn total compensation of up to $365 million dollars.
Quick question: How many years would it take to earn $365,000,000 at $50,000 per year?
It would take 7,300 years.

Thinking is an experimental dealing with small quantities of energy, just as a general moves miniature figures over a map before setting his troops in action.

I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.

I love this quote - what a great way to introduce a unit on SPACE.

A Bus Ride to Mars
Lockheed Martin has launched Generation Beyond, a first of its kind, national educational program to bring the science of space into thousands of homes and classrooms across America. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program is designed to inspire the next generation of innovators, explorers, inventors and pioneers to pursue STEM careers.
Generation Beyond includes a real-life Mars Experience Bus that will travel the country providing student riders with an interactive experience simulating a drive along the red planet’s surface.
The Lockheed Martin Mars Experience Bus is the first immersive virtual reality vehicle ever built and replicates 200 square miles of the Martian surface. The Mars Experience was built with the same software used in today’s most advanced video games. Check out the amazing website and Videos

NRiCH - WILD MATHS
Wild maths is mathematics without bounds. Here, you are free to roam and develop as a mathematician. Embark on a mathematical adventure!
Mathematics is a creative subject. It involves spotting patterns, making connections, finding new ways of looking at things and using what you already know in new contexts. Creative mathematicians play around with examples, draw pictures, have the courage to experiment and ask good questions.
Wild Maths provides games, investigations, stories and spaces to explore, where there are discoveries to be made.
Of course any maths that involves chocolate is great.
Got it is a great activity for Foundation and Stage 1. Play it on the tablet or on the computer against the computer. Then send in yoru comments.

A VERY Splendid & WORTHwhile THING

REAL LIFE, BABEL FISH - language translator

In the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy universe, this galactic-scale conundrum is solved with a babel fish, a fish you stick in your ear that eats other people's brainwaves and excretes a translation into your mind.
Star Trek had a Universal translator.
The Pilot
We don't have a mythical fish like this on Earth though, nor do we have a Universal Translator, so Waverly Labs made their own version of it: The Pilot. Check out the video. How amazing will this be?
The Pilot is the world's first language-translating earpiece. It works in pairs, meaning you wear one earpiece and the person you're speaking with wears the other. From there, your speech will be translated almost immediately to the other wearer's language, which they'll hear in their earpiece.
I can't wait to get my hands on one. How amazing would this be if you have children in you class who couldn't speak English? No problem with this device. It is still in development but plans are to ship it in 2017.

I do answer all emails so send them along with your questions ideas and great sites.

Hi Cathy,
I was able to score one of the new ipad Airs being given out to staff last week. I had a look at iMovie at home and started to do a trailer. Today I gave the first lesson to the class. I thought...just go for it Paul.
Well..........
IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! The kids did not want to go out to lunch. I had to force them to stop about 15 minutes after the lunch bell went. The iPads then had to go to the next class but when my class came in after lunch, they ALL wanted to make trailers again.

One very quiet boy, Sam(not his real name)in Year 3, whipped up a great trailer in about 5 minutes. He gave me a few hints and after some trial and error, helping a group, I figured out a few of the techniques he had used. All the kids just LOVED the experience and of course I was tying it in with our Narrative writing.
See kids, that is why we should write a narrative....so we can film it ha ha ha
You were right, it is pretty simple and the trick is more about how creative you can be. Some of the kids just came up with BRILLIANT ideas and shots and they are only in Year 2 and Year 3!!!!!
It was the most exciting day I have had at school for years!!!

After school, I worked out how to save one of the better trailers onto my class desktop computer. We played it on the smartboard and it looked GREAT.

I had a go and got the kids created something awesome.
It was a great day for all of us.
Tomorrow will be even better. I just HAD to write and tell you about how exciting it all was.
Thank you Cathy for all the support you have always given.
Paul

Good morning,
I found this resource on your site - http://www.theoceancleanup.com/ and it inspired me to help bring awareness to the problem plastic is having on our environment.
This is the reason I am contacting you, we partnered up with Insinkerator and a world class designer and made this infographic - http://insinkerator.co.uk/uk/page/environmental-cost-of-bottled-water
It highlights the impact that plastic bottles is having on our environment, we're hoping to extend the reach of this resource by placing it on relevant sites - such as yours.
Please let me know if this is possible?
Kind regards
James

Hi!
It probably wouldn’t shock most people to learn that weather-related disasters have increased in frequency and intensityover the last several years. Indeed, the wrath of nature can be frightening -- but the good news is that we aren’t powerless against it.
In honor of our new website, the DisasterWeb team is spreading the word about the importance of disaster safety education. Please feel encouraged to add any (or all) these to your fantastic list of community resources. This list would be a nice fit on your website (especially if shared here: http://www.virtualteacher.com.au/disasters.html).
Thanks for your help in passing this critical information on! Also, I’d be happy to write a research-based article on this topic for your site free of charge, if you’re interested -- just let me know.
Thanks,
Bradley
Bradley Davis

Thanks for the list of sites Bradley. I will put your main site up on VT as well. Take a look at these resources VT subscribers and let meknow your thoughts.
